Late-Blooming Shrubs
Most people head to their garden center in spring and find a great selection of spring-flowering shrubs. Smart gardeners also return in late summer and fall for the selection of late-blooming shrubs that produce interesting blooms or berries in fall. Although the selection is not as broad as shrubs that bloom earlier, those that have fall flowers provide late season interest in your landscape that extends the fun just a little longer. Look for fall-blooming shrubs such as bluebeard and shrubs that put on a second bloom in fall, such as roses.
There are some practical advantages to buying and planting fall shrubs. The weather tends to be slightly cooler, and rainfall is more common as the season winds down; this is beneficial to shrubs and helps them settle before winter starts. You might also find them at a lower cost as well because the landscape departments are reluctant to keep too many items over winter.
